Product Description

Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant "The Shack" wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You'll want everyone you know to read this book!

Christian fiction at its best 5 by .. R. Betz (Hartland, WI United States)
This is a life changing book. I talked to God today in prayer unlike anytime in recent years due to this book. It is interesting, thought provoking, and well written. It may change your life too.

Powerful and encouraging 5 by .. Kathleen Brown (Morro Bay, ca)
I've always had this sense that when we get to heaven God is going to embrace and love us, and then shake his head and say, "Wow - you sure went off on some strange tangents and made mountains out of molehills." I believe the "controversy" over this book will fall into that category.

This book provides a view of God, and his love for us, in a fresh way that touched me in a unique way. It gave me such a vivid example of how God loves me - just as I am TODAY - that I have renewed strength and commitment. There is nothing in the book that contradicts the Bible that I have studied and loved for years. Read it with an open mind and heart - and be prepared to be different when you finish the book than when you started.

The Shack Surprises 5 by .. Alice W. Roth ()
"The Shack" stretched my mind in terms of how I view God. Portraying the author's views of God in the form of fiction allowed me to get emotionally involved in the process. This is a book that I dog-eared in order to return to thoughts that I want to reconsider or remember. It's a book that I want to keep for myself. I'll purchase copies for others!

This book will change your life! 4 by .. Eric Smith (Pittsburgh, PA)
My church had a book study for this book so I decided to get it since it was reccomended by our pastor. Wow was I in for a surprise! This is a very movie book and you really get to know the main characer Mackenzie well. You even get to know "god" well when reading this. Mackenzie is a married man who loses his daughter Missy when on a camping trip. She ends up getting killed and a year later gets a note from a mysterious person on his door step. It asks him to come up to the shack, the same shack where Missy was killed. Why would he want to go back there? Was this a practical joke? I was very moved by his encounter with God and a few of his "friends" at the shack. Sorry for giving you spoilers but this book really is life-changing. It is very philisophical. If you are a Christian like me you will have a good time reading this beacuse it says the truth about God and how He works. If you are not Christian you may think it's just another fictional book. Even if you are not Christian or believe in God you should still consider this moving book. It can be moving even if you are not religious. This has definately been one of the best purchases I made so far.

Absolute Fiction, Little Truth 1 by .. L. Holmes (Michigan)
This book is well written, easy to read and will entertain you purely on a fictional level, but it holds little to no truth according to what the Bible tells us. My suggestion to all Christians who decide to read this book is to make sure you know the bible first and then you will know when the book is not in line with what God teaches us.

Delicious Vampire Romance fraught with Angst 5 by .. A. Rogers (Irvine, CA United States)
The obsession continues with the addition of this book to the Twilight saga. I can't seem to get enough of Bella, Edward, Jacob and all the Cullens!

Best Series Ever! 5 by .. Caroline K. Billipp (Dallas, TX)
The Twilight Saga is a must read! But make sure you don't have any pressing immediate issues to attend to because you will simply neglect everything but the books. Amazing! I could not put them down and each one was better then the next. This book tugs at your heart strings a bit - but so worth it. Stephanie Meyer does not dissapoint and I hope that she continues to write such thriling, entertaining and intense literature. 5 Stars!!!

Was this a Fantasy Book or a Sexual Fantasy Book? 3 by .. lntrinsic ()
I am not sure if the author was intending to make Bella like this or it just happened as she was writing...

I did enjoy the first two books and was enjoying the third one till Bella started being so ANNOYING... The author did eliminate the beauty of the book and turned Bella into a cheap selfish girl... I mean come on if this book is read by teens look at the message its delivering to them, there are many reading this book and obssessed by it...

I am not a Teen yet I love every now and then to read fantasy books and let my mind drift away... but reading this book all I saw was images of Bella making out with whoever passes her way... Its good that she didnt make out with Victoria... I dont know what happened but after all the smooching and shudderring that bella felt every time she touched someone, I start to wonder if this was a Fantasy book or a Sexual Fantasy Book...

There is a thin line between love and physical touch... and that is where the author lost it... I cant see Bella except like a self manipulating girl who wants to have everything... The author forgot that her target audience were mainly teens and she removed morals and ethics from the story...

I was really disappointed and decided to take a break before I read Book 4... Yet I cannot deny that the author has her way with words which makes you keep reading even if you dont like what you see...

PS: Read The host if you get the chance its a good book...

Eclipse Twilight Saga Book 3 (Paperback) 1 by .. Andrea Gagnon White (Orange County, CA)
I absolutely love this series & the book was in somewhat acceptable condition when I received it.
However that's not what was promised. I purchased the book NEW & when I received it, the cover was completely scratched up.
I thought it could have been something in the mailing, but it was well-protected in the box. So I don't know why Amazon would send me a NEW book that LOOKED incredibly tatterd.
The series itself is fantastic!

Life gives you choices... 5 by .. Trina Mason ()
Bella finds herself struggling between decisions. Edward or Jacob? Mortal or Immortal? Again, Bella pulls you in with her as she settles on her fate.

There are three back-stories in this third installment that are interesting; however, does not make it reader-friendly as a re-read, but still the story-line makes it almost unnoticable.

Wonderful story. The series should have ended here.

"Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. 'Be very still,' he whispered, as if I wasn't already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat."

As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because--he's a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.

Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward's sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer's writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction. (Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Stephenie Meyer

Q: Were you a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Angel? What are you watching now that those shows are off the air?
A: I have never seen an entire episode of Buffy or Angel. While I was writing Twilight, I let my older sister read along chapter by chapter. She's a huge Buffy fan and she kept trying to get me to watch, but I was afraid it would mess up my vision of the vampire world so I never did.

I don't have a ton of time for TV, and my kids get rowdy when I have on "mommy shows," but I do have a secret fondness for reality shows (the good ones, at least in my opinion). I always TiVo Survivor, The Amazing Race, and America's Next Top Model.

Q: What inspired you to write Twilight? Is this the beginning of a series? Why write for teens?
A: Twilight was inspired by a very vivid dream, which is fairly faithfully transcribed as chapter thirteen of the book. There are sequels on the way--I'm hard at work editing book two (tentatively titled New Moon) right now, and book three is waiting in line for its turn.
I didn't mean to write for teens--I didn't mean to write for anyone but myself, so I had an audience of one twenty-nine year old (and later one thirty-one year old when my sister started reading). I think the reason that I ended up with a book for teens is because high school is such a compelling time period--it gives you some of your worst scars and some of your most exhilarating memories. It's a fascinating place: old enough to feel truly adult, old enough to make decisions that affect the rest of your life, old enough to fall in love, yet, at the same time too young (in most cases) to be free to make a lot of those decisions without someone else's approval. There's a lot of scope for a novel in that.

Q: What is your favorite vampire story? Fave vampire movie?
A: I guess my favorite vampire story would be The Vampire Lestat, by Anne Rice, simply because it's one of the only ones I've ever read. I keep meaning to pick up Bram Stoker's Dracula, because I get asked this question so often and I should probably start with the classics, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Again, I'm afraid to read other vampire books now, for fear of finding things either too similar, or too different from my own vampire world.

Ack! I can't even answer the movie question. I can't remember ever seeing a single vampire movie, outside of clips from Bela Lugosi movies on TV. I don't like true horror movies--my favorite scary movies are all Hitchcock's.

Q: What other young adult authors do you read?
A: My favorite young adult author is L.M. Montgomery I also enjoy J.K. Rowling (but who doesn't?), and Ann Brashares. As a teen, I skipped straight to adult books (lots of sci-fi and Jane Austen), so I'm rediscovering the world of teen literature now.

Q&A with Stephanie Meyer

Q: What book has had the most significant impact on your life?
A: The book with the most significant impact on my life is The Book of Mormon. The book with the most significant impact on my life as a writer is probably Speaker for the Dead, by Orson Scott Card, with Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier coming in as a close second.

Q: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?
A: The CD is easy: Absolution by Muse, hands down. It's harder to give myself just one movie, but the one I watch most frequently is Sense and Sensibility--the one with the screenplay by Emma Thompson. One book is impossible. I'd have to have Pride and Prejudice, but I couldn't live without something by Orson Scott Card and a nice, thick Maeve Binchy, too.

Q: What is the worst lie you've ever told?
A: My lies are all very, very boring: "No, you really look great in hot pink!" "My children only watch one hour of TV a day." "I didn't eat the last Swiss Cake Roll--it must have been one of the kids." That's the best I've got.

Q: Describe the perfect writing environment.
A: It's late at night and the house is silent, but I'm still (miraculously) full of energy. I have my headphones in and I'm listened to a mix of Muse, Coldplay, Travis, My Chemical Romance, and The All-American Rejects. Beside me is a fabulous, and yet mysteriously low in calorie, cheesecake....

Q: If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?
A: I'd like it to say that I really tried at the important things. I was never perfect at any of them, but I honestly tried to be a great mom, a loving wife, a good daughter, and a true friend. Under that, I'd want a list of my favorite Simpsons quotes.

Q: Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?
A: I'd love to have a chance to talk to Orson Scott Card--I have a million questions for him. Mostly things like, "How do you come up with this stuff?!" But, if he wasn't available, I'd settle for Matthew Bellamy (lead singer of Muse).

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: I'd want something offensive, rather than defensive. Like shooting fireballs from my hands. That way, you're really open to going either way--hero or villain. I like to have choices.

I read the entire series in less than a week... 5 by .. Alisha Jannelli (Owasso, OK)
OK, so when I first heard about this book, I was skeptical. Vampires? Hmmm. For some strange reason I bought it anyway. I absolutely love this book and could not put it down. Anyone who is a sucker for a good romance story will as well. The book is extremely detailed and as you read you really get a sense of how the girl feels and, I think, it is quite realistic. I don't know much about vampire lore and all that, but it is nice to see a vampire in a good sense and this book makes me want to date one. My only complaint about the series is that the first 2/3rds of the books don't really seem to have a lot going on (all though you still find yourself not able to put it down), and in the last 3rd, the action gets squeezed in.

If you are looking for a book with a huge amount of substance, double entendres, allegories and what not, well this probably isn't the book for you. But if you want a book where you can get entirely wrapped up in the story and find yourself thinking about the characters even while you're not reading, definitely the one.

Amazing 5 by .. Jess ()
If I could give this book, and the rest of the series more than 5 stars, I would. Stephanie Meyers has written an amazing book that keeps your attention going throughout the whole book. I bought the first book out of sheer curiosity. Once I started reading it, I was only 1/2 way through the 1st book, and ordered the 2nd for next day shipping because I couldn't wait to get it. The book is great because Meyers uses typical ideas of vampires, while spinning her own. She makes you feel so drawn into the book, and has your imagination going a mile a minute, while you feel like you're in Bella's shoes. You feel like you're living the experiences, not just reading about them. I would suggest this series to anyone. They've quickly become my favorite books.

Intense and Fantastic! 5 by .. Jennifer L. Cook (Jackson, NJ)
When a friend recommended this book to me I didn't think anything of it. Then another friend...and another...and finally I gave it a go and OMG am I happy that I did. This book was probably one of the most intense, exciting, and romantic stories I have read in a while. I love the characters, their complicated relationships, and how it comes together in a sort of supernatural Romeo/Juliet kind of way. A die hard Buffy fan in my teens (I am 24 now), this book has reignited my obsession for vampire love stories.

The first half is enjoyable but the second half is absurd. On the whole this book is entirely mediocre. Not recommended 3 by .. Juushika (Oregon, United States)
Bella is a new student in high school when she meets inhumanly handsome Edward. Despite their initial antagonism, the two are drawn inexorably into a passionate romance with one major complication: Edward is a vampire. The Twilight series is a recent young adult phenomenon with a bastion of rabid fans as well as many critics. Personally, I found Twilight neither good enough to love or bad enough to joyfully mock. Although it is fluffy and immature, the book begins well--but midway through it takes a sharp turn into the absurd and quickly degenerates. As a result, this book is entirely mediocre, and I don't recommend it.

The tragedy of Twilight (for me, at least) is that it's an enjoyable book go horribly wrong. That isn't to say that the premise is brilliant, but there is something good there. The book begins with a standard "new student" YA trope, and Bella is an unremarkable and vaguely irritating protagonist. But things turn around when she meets Edward. Enigmatic and mercurial, he is immediately attractive and secretive enough to be fascinating. The early stages of his relationship with Bella is also intriguing--his vampirism is comically predictable, but the gradual revelation of his personality is much more complex and interesting. So the first half of the book goes on: the protagonist is annoying, the prose is lengthy fluff in dire need of an editor, but Edward is intriguing and the story captures the reader's interest.

Until the middle of the book, that is. Almost exactly halfway through, Edward steps into direct sunlight and sparkles. Sparkling vampires epitomizes the Twilight series's foolish fluff, but it also marks the change in Twilight from enjoyment to pure absurdity. Edward sparkles, and then in quick succession Edward cleanly dumps his entire life story on Bella, Edward turns out to be a creepy stalker, Edward and Bella fall madly in love, an antagonist shows up for a long slew of action sequences that feel out of place against the rest of the book, some predictable and exaggerated angst ensues, and then Bella begins her campaign to have Edward turn her into a vampire before she gets "old." The protagonist remains irritating, the prose is still rambling fluff, but there is no longer a fascinating character or any gradual developments to make the book worthwhile or even enjoyable. Even the absurdity is more frustrating than it is funny: unrealistic, stereotypical, and (in Bella's premature, all-consuming love and Edward's stalkerish tendencies) a bit disturbing.

I liked Edward in the first half of the book, and wish that the second half continued in the same vein. Failing that, I wish that Twilight were as wonderful as fans claim or as laughably bad as detractors say. If it were either extreme, it might be fun to read. As it is, Twilight is enjoyable and then absurd without reaching an extreme at either end. It is conflicted. It is middling. It is average and entirely mediocre. It certainly doesn't deserve the fervor that it's received, but it's not particularly fun to mock, either. I'm not sorry to have read this book, and there's no strong reason to avoid it--there are worse novels, and this one is a brief waste of time. Neither do I recommend it. The book just isn't worth reading and there are many better YA and vampire novels out there.

Love it or hate it, you'll probably still read it. 5 by .. Nicole Wilde (Hudson, NH United States)
I've read many glorious reviews for this book and some pretty bad ones as well. I think this book and this series does an excellent job of getting your imagination working as well as sitting kids down to read, which is no easy feat these days.

I for one enjoyed this book. However, I am all for romance novels.

I found it worth the money 4 by .. so many books . . . (Statesboro, GA)
I found the book worth the money I paid for it. I thought it had a lot of tips that the Users Guide which came with the Kindle did not include. I admit I am not that technical -- someone who already knows a lot might not need this, but I found it helps me get the most out of my purchase. The Kindle is expensive. The small amount of money this book costs relative to the cost of the Kindle, so that you can maximize your use of the device, made it worth it to me.

I have updated my rating to a 5. 3 by .. J. W. Garrett (Troy Alabama)
Most of what I found useful I likely could have found if I read the manual. It wasn't very expensive though.

I am updating my review. The system will not let me change my rating but I would update it to a 5. I got out the manual for my Kindle today and found it did not have much information at all. This book is worth more than I realized at the time I wrote my initial review.

Windwalker is a life-saver 5 by .. Fog City Fan (San Francisco, CA USA)
Being somewhat over the age of consent, I have found this publication to be extremely helpful. It is a work in progress. A particularly attractive feature is that you can receive updates as they become available. Don't expect that from your Funk and Wagnalls. The author gently led me through information about features that are hardly touched upon in the user handbook and not at all in their advertising. I look forward to more information as it is developed. Thank you Mr. Windwalker.

How to Use the Amazon Kindle for Email & Over 100 Pages of Other Cool Tips (The Complete User's Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kind 5 by .. V. Gail Royster (Knoxville TN)
I found the guide to be very helpful and extremely detailed. I was able to learn more regarding how to use my Kindle from this guide than from the reference guide that came with my Kindle. The guide also provided a lot of useful links and I really liked the links to free ebook downloads. Well worth the BETA price for certain.

I am a weekly traveling consultant and spend a lot of time on planes and in hotels. My Kindle is the perfect travel companion. I found this guide to be very resourceful and it contains a lot of useful information and it is much easier to read than the manual that came with the Kindle. It also saved me a lot of trial and error time.

I realize that not every one can be pleased but I have no complaints especially considering how little this item cost. I appreciate that the author put a lot of effort into learning how to use his Kindle and for taking the time to share this information in written form.

Really love the twilight saga! Thought Book 2 was great although I prefer The other 3 to it simply because I am an Edward lover.

....A great follow up in the series.... 5 by .. Tam Tam ()
Stephenie Meyer's second in the series continues to develop the characters we love.

Another 5 stars for the series.

The story picks right up where Twilight left off (well a few months have past between stories) But a most perplexing injury makes Bella the popular girl at the party of fasting vampires. Oh no! Does a rift form between Bella and Edward?

....A great follow up in the series....

New Moon The Twilight Saga Book 2 (Paperback) 5 by .. Andrea Gagnon White (Orange County, CA)
I am in love with this series & I haven't read anything better since Harry Potter! I found that these stories were so pure & innocent in the sense of romance as opposed to some trashy, shallow romance novel.
It took quite the imagination to create this world of vampires & mortals & I would give Meyer more than two thumbs up if I had more than two thumbs!

Read this series 5 by .. Jason E. Berry ()
I am not exactly sure why Stephenie's books are so riveting - there is just something about the way she tells the story - simply amazing!
This book is pretty much a downer of a book, yet I continued to turn the pages at a rapid pace, waiting for what I could only hope would eventually happen, and I was not disappointed!
As I stated in my review of Twilight, I do not believe these books would be half as good, written by a man. Stephenie is somehow able to pour the intensity of her character's emotions directly into the written word, where you yourself end up directly feeling the agonizing pain or extreme joy, as if you yourself knew these characters personally.

If you have not yet decided to read this series, I highly recommend that you do so!!

I download it wirelessly within 20 seconds of clicking buy. That is an amazing feat when you consider how massive the Sunday edition of any newspaper including the New York Times can be. The level of detail that is present in the Kindle edition is downright cool. There are usually pictures spread throughout attached to some of the most pressing stories. The way that they arrange it is through a folder system (now if they could only let us do the same for our normal books)making it a breeze to navigate through. The slant is decidely liberal but that isn't something that is a necessary detail when reviewing a Kindle edition of a paper. Do not hesitate to purchase on occasion or subscribe to; although I feel that the subscription price is a bit high.

Boy, Was I Wrong... 5 by .. Joe Wikert (Fishers, IN)
A couple of weeks ago I blogged about how I was going to give The New York Times a test drive on my Kindle. As a charter member of the Tightwad's Club I was also griping about the rather pricey $13.99 monthly subscription rate. Regardless, I figured I might as well use the free two-week trial that's offered to all Kindle owners.

Two weeks and two business trips later, I'm here to tell you that this subscription is worth every penny of the $13.99/month. How many times have you struggled to read a newspaper on a flight? Whether it's folding it up, knocking things over or just getting all that nasty ink on your hands, I've never found it convenient to read a paper on an airplane. The Kindle newspaper experience is, of course, a breeze by comparison.

I especially loved it that no matter where I was in the country I knew when I woke up the latest edition was waiting for me. Then there's the quality of the content. Sorry, Indianapolis Star editorial team, but I can't believe the quality OpEd material I've been missing out on. Thomas Friedman alone is probably worth the $13.99 monthly fee. In fact, I'm now struggling with whether I should bother maintaining a subscription to the Indianapolis Star. The only thing that's standing between me and cancellation is my wife; she enjoys reading it, particularly since she doesn't get regular access to the Times on my Kindle.

Are there drawbacks? Sure. The "Back" button doesn't always take me where I think it should. I've also had a couple more Kindle lockups while reading the Times. And although it's kind of nice to read a paper with no ads, it feels odd. A work colleague was showing me his new 3G iPhone the other day and mentioned that The New York Times is completely free on it. As I tried it out I noticed subtle ads at the bottom of each screen. I'm not sure if that's how Apple is funding free access to the Times but Amazon should explore the same option, even if it's only to lower the price further and bring in a much larger audience.

The other thing that still feels strange is how this service straddles the fence between static and dynamic content. All you're getting is an image of each day's newspaper, which is fine, but since I have a live connection why not offer periodic updates throughout the day? The Times website offers breaking news from time to time, so why not push that out to Kindle subscribers as well?

Overall though I'm now a huge fan of The New York Times and am thoroughly enjoying the experience of reading it on my Kindle.

Product Description

The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban's backyard. Anyone who despairs of the individual's power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan's treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schools especially for girls that offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortenson's quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.

A Wonderful Tale of a True Modern Hero 5 by .. Genevieve M. Yates ()
I raced home, (on foot) after work each day to devour more pages of this exceptional story. Greg Mortenson is inspiring, a driven and motivated man on a quest to save us all, one school at a time. Risking all he has, his family, his life. I love his dedication to his focus of educating students, and most of all young girls living in poverty half way around the world.

An excellent read! I loved it!

Boring Title, Great Book 5 by .. T. Karr (MO USA)
When my mother gave me this book to read I was a little scared of what I might find inside. The name, "Three Cups of Tea" didn't sound very exciting. The cover, showing three young girls studying, didn't look very appealing. And the subtitle, "One Man's Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time," wasn't the most exciting thing in the world either. It looked like an Oprah book or a chick lit book.

Since my Mom recommended it, I read it...and thoroughly enjoyed "Three Cups of Tea."

The book is about Central Asia Institute director, Greg Mortenson, and how building schools in the highlands of Pakistan and Afghanistan became his passion. Still sounds like an Oprah book, doesn't it? Well it is much, much more. The reader gets the account of how Mortenson's failed attempt to climb K2 nearly led to his death and how that failure gave him the idea of building schools in remote regions of Asia.

The reader is also given a thoughtful look at what it was like for Americans who were in this part of Asia when the planes struck the World Trade Center in 2001. Mortenson's ideas on promoting peace through education seem somewhat idealistic at times, but the man's passion for this cause comes blazing through in every chapter.

"Three Cups of Tea" is an exciting adventure story as well as an inspirational story showing that one man can make a difference.

Required reading 5 by .. Neil E Brown ()
gripping from start to finish. An important book for readers of all ages. A lesson in choosing the really important issues and having the guts to follow the righ path.

Amazing! 5 by .. S.A. (CA, USA)
I would definitely vote this book as an award winner (it gets really good after the first half -- especially towards the last third of the book). Greg Mortenson definitely needs to win the Nobel Peace Prize! A definite must-read for our times.

Schools, not bombs 5 by .. E. Fischer (Traverse City, MI)
It's a little rough in the beginning with the narrator's obvious opinion that Mortenson poops sunshine but the story draws you in. And you will cheer at the end and gratefully write a check. This is how peace will happen in the world. Our leaders will be almost irrelevant to the process.

WSJ Print and Online only costs $99.00 1 by .. R. Parenteau ()
The WSJ offers professionals both the print and online versions of the WSJ together in a bundle for $99.00 per year. Here you can get the Kindle only version of the WSJ for $119.88 per year. In my view this is a bad value. Amazon needs to negotiate better packages with these publishers. I don't want the print version, and would prefer Kindle and Online versions for $99.00. This should be an easy "yes" since the WSJ saves printing and delivery costs for the paper copy.

$95 for print, where? 3 by .. E. Budke (NY USA)
So we got one of the kindle's as an anniversary present and I decided to look into the WSJ thing to see how it was and if it were maybe cheaper. I see in these other reviews that people are getting the print edition for $95/yr. I look online and the new subscriber price is quite a bit more, apparently my price is $499/2yr. I can essentially justify another kindle on this alone. Seems ok otherwise.

Great Newspaper 4 by .. PG (Dayton, Ohio)
I really loved reading the WSJ on my Kindle. However I would like to also read the Asia and European versions as well. I have always found the WSJ to have great financial information.

More pictures and graphs please! 4 by .. R. G. Tichy (North Barrington, IL)
The content is fine, it's the WSJ you read already probably. (With the vitriolic right wing nutjob editorials, of course.)

There aren't as many pictures in the Kindle version, no graphs, etc. but also no ads (good!).

There is no access to yesterday's issue though if you didn't get it downloaded yesterday, so you cannot "catch up" if you like or if someone tells you about an article that appeared 2 days ago but you don't have it on your Kindle already.

Works great for me 5 by .. S (USA)
The Kindle edition of the WSJ is priced great and is wonderful to have on my kindle. I get the monthly edition and find it very useful! Love it!

Ancient Wisdom 5 by .. J. J. Vodvarka (Houston, TX United States)
I loved this book am re-reading it, and have bought and recommended it to others. I find the ancient spiritual philosophy to be a refreshing change from the 'noise' from modern religions. This book and philosophy are profound and simple; zen for the common man.

A life-changing book, even for the impossible me. 5 by .. M. Laster (Nashville, TN)
I had just found out that my ex-boyfriend's father, a man who I loved and admired deeply, had passed away. Then, about an hour later, I came across this book. After reading the back through my tears, I decided that I might be able to use a little spirituality right then to help me deal with my grief, so I bought it. As I mourned, I read. I read, and I mourned. I'm not a religious person at all (quite the opposite, actually), but I do consider myself spiritual.

There was something about this book that really changed the way I see myself and life in general. I started to see personality flaws that I hadn't been able to recognize before, things that were making not only me, but those around me, miserable. Little by little as I worked myself through the pages, I was coming to some sort of self-realization (or the start of "awakening" as Eckhart Tolle puts it), as well as aiding myself in the mourning process.

I finished the book three weeks ago, and the last three weeks have been the best weeks I've literally had in years. Though I still don't consider myself "religious," and likely never will, I definitely feel that my relationship with God has gotten much more intense and powerful. I look at life as more of a gift than a painful burden. I look at those around me with stronger feelings of love and endearment. I have a positive outlook now, instead of letting negative notions of the ego destroy me and hurt those around me. I'm less angry, I'm much less depressed, and well, as a matter of fact - I'm quite happy - something I haven't been able to say in probably 8 or 9 years.

If you're miserable, depressed, and bitter all the time, think about picking up this book. It's not a problem-solver in itself, but it certainly makes you more aware of who you are and the things you do. Oh, and by the way...I'm not much of a reader. I'm a college student and I try to avoid reading unless it's for class, but I couldn't seem to put this book down. So, the fact that it was so captivating to ME really means something! :)

An interesting read into transcending ego and achieving peace in your life. 3 by .. Travis S (Houston, TX (USA))
When I first purchased A New Earth, it was via a friends recommendation and I'll admit I had a gift card purchase to Barnes & Noble to blow. I didn't quite know what to expect, especially with this being a fairly wide departure from the science fiction, self-help, and fiction books I tend to read. In a way, A New Earth is self-help too, but a little more watered down than a lot of self-help books I've read.

With that being said, I did find Tolle's A New Earth to be a helpful book. The main focus of the book is to get the reader to consciously be aware of their thoughts and that their thoughts DO NOT control their emotions but rather their emotions are a direct response to their thoughts. In addition, Tolle tells the reader to try his/her best to always live in the present moment. There is nothing you can do about the past and there is nothing you can do about the future except to live each present moment one at a time. That is to not say you can't learn from past mistakes and that you can't make future plans, just don't get so caught up in what you did in the past or so strung-out over that college degree or work project due in 4 weeks.

I'll admit, this was a tough read at times due to my negative mindset. I tend to be a fairly negative person and at times (I am improving though), the negativity creeped in in the form of "What in the hell is he talking about? This will never work". In those times, I'd put the book down and really try and pay attention to what Tolle said instead of making judgments about the book based on my negative moods until I realized that this wasn't the way I needed to be reading the book. By the end of the Book, a great deal of what Tolle has said about one's thoughts, emotions, feelings, staying grounded in the present, being non-reactive in situations before replying had sunk in and many a passage was highlighted.

Aside from it being different than what I usually read, I couldn't give it 4 or 5 stars just because of the fact that it's so wordy at times. Tolle could say what he's trying to say in a few paragraphs instead of stretching it to 5 or 6 pages. The only other minor quirk I have with this book is not enough concrete examples. Now I realize some of these spiritual/inspirational books can't be concrete for the whole book because that defeats the nature of them. However, there were times were Tolle would make a great point and then I'd be left hanging waiting for an example that never came.

Overall, I'd give this book a 3.5 out of 5 though because I did learn from this book, it just could have been condensed more. For $7.70 brand new, I'd definitely recommend getting this for the price. If not, pick up a used copy and see how you like it!

-Travis

Awful 1 by .. Heather (Virginia)
The author offers a few good points, but between those points are pages and pages of useless rambling. I could not make it through the whole book.

An Important Book 5 by .. Grace E. Hinrichs (Rockport, Maine)
The title of this book is a little misleading. It's not really about a "new earth" or "life's purpose" but about something more important, namely the nature of consciousness, the nature of our own minds, the way we identify with our ego mind to our detriment, how we don't really know who we are until we tune in to what Huxley called "Mind-at-large," how that is available to us through what he calls "the discovery of inner space,""the nameless," " the eternal." We get in touch with this level of true being through awareness of the breath, the space between thoughts, inner body awareness.
People who practice meditations will recognize that none of this is really new. In fact Hinduism and Buddhism, as he acknowledges, described these very concepts and practices long ago. But it's nonetheless refreshing to have this secular, modern reminder spelled out in a very compelling way.
I'm not sure I can be as optimistic as he is that this new dimension of consciousness will be taking over and transforming our world ('the new earth"), but I can hope he's right! I think it's a very important book and I'm glad Oprah recommended it to people.

Book Description

The body is the most fascinating machine ever created, and nobody talks about it in ways that are as illuminating and compelling as Dr. Michael Roizen and Dr. Mehmet Oz. Most people think of the aging of our bodies the same way we think of the aging of our cars: the older we get, the more inevitable it is that we're going to break down. Most of us believe that at age 40 or so, we begin the slow and steady decline of our minds, our eyes, our ears, our joints, our arteries, our libido, and every other system that affects the quality of life (and how long we live it). But according to Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz, that's a mistake.

Aging isn't a decline in our systems. It's actually very purposeful. The very systems and biological processes that age us are designed to help us when we're a little bit younger. So what's our role as part of the aging population? To learn how those systems work so we can reprogram them to work the way they did when we were younger. Your goal should be: die young at any age. That means you live a high quality of life (with everything from working joints to working genitals) until the day you die.

At the core of this landmark book are the Major Agers--14 biological processes that control your rate of aging. Some you've heard of, some you haven't, and some you never knew contributed to the aging process. Some speed decline, others inhibit your repair mechanisms. These Major Agers are everything from short telomeres and inefficient mitochondria to stem cells and wacky hormones. The doctors explain the principles of longevity and many of the causes of aging and how to fight the effects. The climax of the book is a 14-day plan to help you along your path to staying young. The doctors want you to be able to integrate important processes into your daily life in order to make staying young routine, but first you'll need to measure your real age and health right now. Staying young encompasses your emotions and mental health as well as your exercise habits, eating habits, personal hygiene, and genes, among other things.

Wouldn't you like to know how to prevent your body from aging badly? The original YOU book showed how bodies work in general, and YOU: On a Diet explained how bodies lose weight and stay fit. Now in YOU: Staying Young, Drs. Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz illuminate the mysterious mechanisms with a lively metaphor -- the modern city. What differentiates a vibrant and thriving city that ages gracefully from one that is worn down and rusted out? Despite genetic differences, which are like the geography upon which the city is built, cities age differently because of the way residents treat their education system (stem cells), power plants (mitochondria), electrical grids (brains), transportation routes (blood vessels), and landfills (fat). You -- as mayor, resident, and street cleaner -- have the power to balance your biological budget to ensure a life that's both long and strong. Thankfully, just as cities can invest in renewal and improving their repair processes, so can you.

YOU: Staying Young is filled with signature YOU Tools, including YOU Tests, YOU Tips, and visual and verbal metaphors to bring the science to life.

A Letter from Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz

Dear Amazon Shoppers:

Our books, YOU: The Owner's Manual and YOU: On a Diet, have become #1 Amazon and New York Times bestsellers, and we thank you. Many people have asked us questions about aging. We want you to know that the science in the last very few years has challenged the very perceptions of aging.

Most of us tend to have the same view of the way people age: As we grow older, we start losing things. We lose some hair, lose our minds, lose our balance, lose our eyesight, lose a little of this and a lot of that until we eventually wither away into a hunched-over senior who takes 3-inch steps and eats dinner at 4:00 pm. But to think that a life of frailty is an inevitable outcome of aging is a mistake. And the fact that we don't take control of it is because we have excuses. We live in a society where making excuses is as easy as making a sandwich. Nowhere is that more apparent than when it comes to your own health. The reason why we are frazzled with stress? Blame the boss. The reason why we are sick? Blame the sniffling kids. The reason why our society's waistbands are stretching and snapping at alarming rates? Blame Auntie's alfredo sauce. The top health excuse, however, revolves around the biggest four-letter word of them all, the GENE. We blame our genes for just about everything--for baldness, for fatness, for illness and for every other health-related problem we can think of. In our minds, that means that our mom, pop, and the rest of the family tree are all on the hook for the ultimate health question of them all--how long and how well we will live?

But that is exactly where more of us have it wrong. While we are certainly born with genes that help determine everything from our height to our risk of heart disease, we are making a monumental mistake by assuming that we can't control our genes--especially when it comes to aging.

Perhaps the best way to explain the dynamics of aging is to take a look at another complex system that is subjected to the same forces as your body: a city. Some cities remain beautiful and elegant in their old age, while younger ones may look worn down and beat-up. Now, every city has its own genetic code, just as you do. For a city, genes are geography; whether it's built on a river or whether it's located in a hot or cold climate, or whether it lies directly in a prevalent hurricane path. A city's geography can't change. But the city can adapt to the environment with earthquake-proof construction, with underground tunnels for walking in wintertime, or with strong levies. The adaptation the city makes to survive and to thrive is what is crucial to its vitality.

The same goes for you.

Just because you have been dealt a genetic hand that predisposes you to heart disease or diabetes or the wearing of pants as large as a parachute doesn't mean you can't mitigate the effects of those genes. One of the major things we will teach you is that while you can't change your genes, you can change whether they are turned on or off or how you express them. Just like a city, you can compensate elegantly if you understand your options.

For the first time in history, the medical world has uncovered many of the miraculous biologic processes that control how and why we age. Truth is, much of aging is actually in our control; with the power to nudge our biologic systems so that our unwanted genes can work in our favor--as long as you know what to do and how you are doing it. In YOU: Staying Young, we translate the latest science (much of which wasn't available even three years ago) to help slow your rate of aging. You will learn 14 Major Agers, and dozens of action steps so that you can take control of those agers and your aging processes.

We hope you enjoy the cartoons, analogies, and jokes. But ultimately we hope you soak in the message: Your health is largely in your control. We dedicate the book to all who desire longer life so they can serve more.

Thanks very much,

Mike and Mehmet

Questions for the Doctors

Q: What is the single most important thing someone can do to combat aging?

A: To understand that you get to control your rate of aging if you want to. It isn't that hard and doesn't take that long. In fact, even if you have had burgers for breakfast or fried your brain cells with stress by noon, you're not necessarily destined to wear husky pants, forget birthdays, and spiral into a state of complete upheaval. That's right: You get a do-over in life if you want it. Repeat after us: not hard, not long.

Q: Is there one food, vitamin, mineral, exercise, or lifestyle change that does more to combat aging than any other?

A: Our top choices in terms of ease and impact:

  • Walk 30 minutes a day and call someone after you do it. No excuses, walk every day. If you do it, you'll have the courage, health, and attitude to adopt other changes too.
  • Take 2 grams of omega-3 fats every day in form of either walnuts, fish oil, or DHA supplements.

Q: What is one of the most surprising contributors to aging that we can easily remove from our lifestyles?

A: Inflammation of our teeth. Remove it with daily flossing and brushing and seeing a dental professional regularly. You won't just save your teeth; you'll also go a long way in saving your heart and arteries. Another? Our lack of turmeric--curry and mustard (mustard on stadium hot dogs does not qualify). Both of those ingredients make your memory better.

Q: What are some of the immediate benefits you will notice from following the tips in the book?

A: You will feel younger. You might get hit upon by strangers or be mistaken for someone 20 years younger. In addition to the waist size you'll lose, your new attitude and vitality for life may give your reading choice away.

Q: How early should most people start to focus on slowing the aging process?

A: The aging process starts in your teens or even before, but any time you start is better than later. (Repeat: not hard, not long.) Your cells basically have a memory of three years. So by changing your habits now, within three years, it's as if you have done your healthy habit all your life.

The alcoholic's next job - fitness and wholeness 5 by .. Dick B. (Kihei, HI USA)
I'm an active, recovered member of the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. I've licked alcoholism and survived devastating open heart surgery. And the road back was demanding, but rewarding. My son gave me this book because I have put my all into "fitness"--fitness in nutrition, fitness into exercise, fitness with supplements and medications, fitness with sleep restoration, and even fitness with Vitamin D3. And why? The excitement I have encountered at age 83 does not come from sobriety or survival. It comes from how much better I feel and act each day because I realize this old Model "T" could be restored, renovated, remodeled, and rescued. I'm still a Model "T," but I want to remain in the race and be a winner still. This book is an inspiring challenge and reward for those who want to stay at the job of living. In my own case, abstinence from drinking is a must but hardly a chore or a challenge. Reliance on God has been the pathway to cure. Following His precepts is the challenge and the necessity. Growth through Bible study, prayer, seeking guidance, and reading are part of the process. And helping others is critical. Now what does this have to do with the "You" book. Everything. Possibly the greatest difficulty in sobriety is the difficulty of picking up the whole armor of God and getting into the fray. Young people, just like I did, can easily fall into the belief that everything is just fine. Just fine, that is, until they see the shambles they have left in themselves and others. I believe emphasis on fitness, nutrition, exercise, sleep, wholesome recreation, more education, employment pursuits, family love, go hand in hand with recovery and cure. This book contains one of the many important road maps. And some of my books show how an alcoholic can utilize the maps and get somewhere besides the nearest bar or liquor store. A New Way In A New Way In: Reaching the Heart of a Child of God in Recovery with His Own, Powerful, Historical Roots; Cured! Proven Help for Alcoholics and Addicts Cured! not as old as i thought 3 by .. D. S. Ohl ()
It is not as informative as I thought it would be. It is OK, but certainly won't change my lifestyle.

A worthwhile owner's manual! 5 by .. Nancy (Dayton, OH USA)
This is a great aid to assist you in understanding how your body works, what it needs, and the impact of what you put in your body and how that affects your health.
Great book for those who have come to realize they have to take care of their body to live well.

Big disappointment 2 by .. B. Freese ()
Having seen the doctor on Oprah, I was excited to get the book and more information. What a disappointment. There is little new material inside; instead there are pages and pages of cumbersome and cutesy graphics, which make for difficult reading. If you saw Dr. Oz on Oprah, you've seen what he has to say; I'd recommend that you save your money and not buy this book. Take a walk instead. :D

Practical but nothng cutting edge 3 by .. SG (Coppell, TX United States)
I thought this book had a lot of practical tips and details but overall nothing cutting edge or revolutionary. I did read another book recently that had some cutting edge diet and fitness info in it--"The Six-Pack Diet Plan" by Rehan Jalali.
